Carbon is the lightest way to build a watch case, and the only one where no two pieces look exactly alike. But "carbon" on a spec sheet covers several different materials, and a lot of watches wear the word without being carbon-cased at all. Here is what a carbon case actually is, and how the guide draws the line.
What a carbon case is
A carbon case is a shell of carbon fibres held together by a resin. It is not a metal. That composite makeup is why a carbon watch is so light, completely non-magnetic, and immune to corrosion, and also why it behaves differently from steel or titanium when you knock it. The kinds of carbon
The names on spec pages mostly describe how the carbon is laid up.

The case is what counts
Plenty of watches put a forged-carbon dial or a carbon bezel on a steel or titanium case and call themselves carbon. In this guide they do not qualify: the material has to be the case shell you actually wear. A metal inner cylinder that only houses the movement is fine, as long as carbon forms the outside of the case (the Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono and Doxa SUB 300 Carbon are built exactly that way).
How it wears
Carbon resists everyday scuffs well and shrugs off water and magnetism, but it is brittle: it cannot dent, so a hard enough impact can chip or crack it, and a scratch cannot be polished out the way it can on metal. Think of the light weight and the looks as the reward and the impact risk as the thing to mind.
