Those hairline scratches a steel case picks up are mostly a question of the material it is made from. Here is how titanium, ceramic, bronze, and steel rank on surface hardness, and the one catch that hardness brings with it.

Hardness is what resists scratches

Scratch resistance tracks surface hardness, measured on the Vickers (HV) scale. Ceramic is in a class of its own; hardened titanium beats plain steel; bare titanium and bronze are the softest. The higher the number, the fewer marks from keys, desks, and door frames.

The catch: hard can mean brittle

The most scratch-resistant material is also the most breakable. Ceramic is so hard because it is brittle, so a knock that would only dent metal can chip or crack it, and the damage cannot be polished out. Titanium and steel are the reverse: softer, so they scratch, but tough, so they survive drops and can be refinished. Bronze is softest of all, but its patina camouflages marks, so scratches matter least on it.
