The Wristwatch Field Guide

Ceramized Titanium Explained

Ceramized titanium is the material that is both: a titanium core with a hard, ceramic-like surface. It is why a handful of watches appear in both the titanium and the ceramic guide, and why this union tracks it as its own material. Here is what it is and how it wears.

What it is

Ceramized titanium starts as a titanium alloy whose outer surface is converted, through a controlled oxidation process, into a hard ceramic layer. The part remains one integrated piece: a tough titanium core with a scratch-resistant, often deep-black ceramic skin. It is not a coating sitting on top of the metal, and it is not a solid ceramic block. IWC markets its version as Ceratanium; Panerai markets its version as Ti-Ceramitech.

Why it is in both guides

Because it genuinely is both materials. The base is titanium, so titanium fans count it as one of theirs; the surface is ceramic, so ceramic fans do too. Rather than pick a side, the guides list these pieces in both, from the same underlying record, and this union guide gives them their own material label.

How it wears

The pitch is the best of both: more scratch resistant than bare titanium, because the surface is ceramic-hard, yet less brittle than a full ceramic case, because the core is still tough titanium. The colour, usually black, is integral to the ceramized layer, so it will not flake or rub off the way a DLC or PVD coating eventually can. The trade-offs are cost, and that if the hard surface does chip on a severe impact, it cannot be refinished.

Frequently asked questions

What is ceramized titanium?

Ceramized titanium starts as a titanium alloy whose surface is converted to a hard, ceramic-like layer. The result is a titanium core with a scratch-resistant, often permanently black ceramic skin. IWC calls its version Ceratanium; Panerai calls its version Ti-Ceramitech.

Is Ceratanium titanium or ceramic?

Both, which is why it appears in both the titanium and ceramic guides. The base metal is titanium, and the surface is ceramic. This union guide tracks it as its own material, ceramized titanium.

Is ceramized titanium better than plain titanium or ceramic?

It aims for the best of both: more scratch resistant than bare titanium, and less brittle than a full ceramic case, because the core is still tough titanium. The trade-offs are cost and that the hard surface cannot be refinished if it chips.
