Forged Carbon vs Carbon Fiber

Two watches can both be "carbon" and look nothing alike. The difference is how the fibre is arranged: chopped and pressed, or laid up in sheets. That one choice drives the look, and some of the strength and cost.

Forged carbon: pressed fragments

Forged carbon takes short, randomly-oriented fibre pieces, mixes them with resin, and compresses them into a block that is then machined into a case. Because the fragments point every which way, the surface has a marbled, cloudy pattern that is different on every single case. It is relatively simple and affordable to make, which is why most accessible carbon watches use it.

Woven and layered carbon: TPT and NTPT

The other approach stacks continuous carbon-fibre sheets, often hundreds of thin plies, sometimes rotating each layer's grain. Cut and finished, this gives a regular striped or damascus-like pattern. Richard Mille's Carbon TPT is the best-known example. Continuous fibre is generally stronger in-plane, and the controlled layup is more expensive, so this is the haute-horlogerie end.
